One of our offices is located in the city of Koper, the largest city of Slovenian Istria and also home to the sole Slovenian port of Luka Koper.
The city of Koper is considered to be one of the oldest cities in Slovenia, with a rich history dating back to the Middle Bronze Age. The Venetians left the greatest mark in this area, and gave the city its name, Capo d'Istria (Head of Istria). The name Capodistria is still used today along with the Slovenian name – Koper.
Venetians didn’t leave their mark just on the city name but also on the city’s architecture, which can be noticed when observing the Praetorian Palace, the Lodge, the Muda gate, the Da Ponte well. You can learn more about the history of the city and its surroundings at the Koper Regional Museum and the Ethnological Collection Koper.
Since the Slovenian coast itself is very short (46.6 km), you can also visit the neighbouring coastline towns such as Ankaran, Izola, Piran, Portorož. For those who would like to experience the backcountry of Koper, we recommend a visit of the village of Marezige with its wine fountain, Sočerb with its views that extend all the way to Trieste, village of Hrastovlje and the Holy Trinity Church. decorated with frescoes depicting a funeral dance from 1490.
After a long day of exploring, we recommend that you complete your experience of the Slovenian coast with some excellent Mediterranean food, such as the Karst prosciutto, bakala (cod fish), olive oil, polenta, bobiči (type of Istrian stew), fuži (type of pasta) with truffles, kroštolen (sweet pastry), miške (sweet pastry), etc.
